Moderno Trio’s HeLoved TheSoftPornOfTheCity is part passion play, part psychedelic art rock opera, telling the story of a day in the life of Danish composer Morten “Skovgaard” Danielsen. Skovgaard collaborated with members of Moderno Trio while at an artist’s colony in the Catskills of New York. Along with surrealist film, elliptical story telling and modern dance, the show draws inspiration from classical powerhouses such as Liszt and Beethoven and progressive modern bands like Nirvana and Pink Floyd.

“Ludwig van Beethoven + Kurt Cobain” – Dr. Allan Von Schenkel, founder of Basso Moderno Duo, the predecessor of Moderno Trio, and Kristen Williams, founding member of Washington, DC’s celebrated Great Noise Ensemble, explored this fusion during their collaboration with composer Skovgaard and continued exploring it as they conceived HeLovedTheSoftPornOfTheCity. Von Schenkel says, “Nothing was too crazy. We explored every idea.” The pieces are enhanced by the fiery drumming of James Wesley Edwards, who draws from his passion for African Soukous and jazz masters such as Elvin Jones and Tony Williams. Their music is called “engaging” and “surprising, memorable and effective” by the Washington Post.
